NFL executive rips the Chicago Bears for Justin Fields’ trade.
The Chicago Bears‘ decision to trade quarterback Justin Fields remains one of the most divisive moves made by an NFL team this offseason. The Bears clearly fell in love with Caleb Williams during the NFL Scouting Combine, and every action thereafter has proven that Williams will be the franchise’s future quarterback.
With the acquisitions of D’Andre Swift, Kennan Allen, and Gerald Everett, the Bears have insured that Williams will have a smooth transition to the NFL after a stellar NCAA career at USC. While the Bears will not officially select Williams until the 2024 NFL Draft later this month, the quarterback has already established relationships with key club members and the front office.
Williams had dinner with current Bears players this week as part of his pre-draft visit to Chicago, which is one of the reasons the team had to deal Fields. Had Fields remained on the Bears’ roster, it would have caused an unneeded controversy in the Bears’ locker room. That is why an unidentified league executive’s critique in The Athletic (subscription required) makes no sense.
The Bears made the move for one simple reason: they no longer wanted Fields as their primary quarterback and were moving towards having Williams be the team’s next representative at the position. The Bears made the transaction to ensure that Williams is ready to thrive from the time he comes into Halas Hall after getting picked. That would not have been conceivable if Fields remained on the roster.
