If Kieran Dowell leaves Rangers this summer to head to England, Derek Ferguson says the team sends him its “best wishes.” As Philippe Clement makes changes to his squad, the future of the Gers midfield player is in doubt. Kenny Miller stated in his Daily Record column on June 2 that the player had “no impact” and that the manager would be open to offers, and Chris Jack stated in his Rangers Review article on May 28 that a return to the south of the border “looks on the cards.”

Ferguson, the former fan favorite at the Ibrox, concurs that the 26-year-old’s move from Norwich a year ago hasn’t been successful following just 16 appearances across all competitions, most of which came off the bench. Although the commentator acknowledges that injuries are very difficult for players, he maintains that the team needs to be “ruthless” in their pursuit of strengthening during the transfer window. “Listen, I’m not having a go at boys who have injuries; I know it must be horrible and heartbreaking for them,” he exclusively said to Ibrox News. However, Rangers must be merciless; we cannot afford that.

I understand that it’s a contact sport—well, the way things are going, it’s becoming less of a contact sport—but you can tell that there is a player there; he’s just not physically fit enough or participates in enough games. Thus, he has our best wishes when he travels to England and joins a club.

“However, as with many of them, it hasn’t happened for him at Rangers.”

Moving from Norwich to Rangers proved difficult for Kieran Dowell. Even though Connor Barron may be heading to a deal, Clement is not overawed by midfield options after Ryan Jack and John Lundstram left due to expiring contracts. However, like Jack, it hasn’t always mattered if Dowell was in the squad because he hasn’t been healthy enough to play.

Although injuries don’t affect anyone more than the player who sustains them, Rangers appear to have struggled with injuries more than most in recent years. Dowell was a free agent, so it might not require a big offer to sign him. A new manager can see that players brought in by the previous one are left out in the cold even in the absence of availability issues. Dowell was signed by Michael Beale.
