REPORT: Tonali received a suspended ban for gambling in Newcastle.

Sandro Tonali, an Italy international, has received a suspended two-month penalty for betting while at Newcastle United.

The former Milan player is already serving a 10-month ban, which will end in August, for violating betting laws while in Italy.

He has been seeking treatment and counseling for his gambling problem, which has persisted since his transfer from Milan to Newcastle United in the summer of 2023.

Tonali was accused by the English FA in March, and he admitted to placing 40 to 50 football wagers while at Newcastle, four of which were on the outcomes of his own side.

Because the odds were always on his side to win, it was viewed with less severity than if he had bet on a draw or defeat.

It is confirmed that he played in three of the four matches that he bet on.

The FA also fined Tonali £20,000 and confirmed the bets were “well in excess of 100,000 euros” (circa £85,600).

This is only a suspended sentence, so will not be added to the current ban and will only be activated if he breaches the betting regulations again.

Tonali received an 18-month suspension, with eight months commuted to a ‘therapeutic plan’ to treat his addiction.
