Kris Boyd declares, “No chance,” in reaction to Paul Merson’s comments about Rangers and Celtic on Sky Sports.
Kris Boyd dismissed Paul Merson’s request that Rangers v Celtic be scheduled for the final game of the season, explaining that the Old Firm is not like English derbies. Boyd said that the game cannot be played on the last day because it cannot begin at 3 p.m., as it does in England, and must start at 12:30 p.m. at the latest.
This came after the panel questioned how the games would be scheduled following the split, amidst the tight title race for the SPFL between the Old Firm clubs. Merson asked live on Sky Sports News [13 April, 13:27]: “Would they have the Celtic v Rangers game on the last day of the season?”. Boyd then said, “No chance.” Absolutely not. They can’t start at three o’clock. It’s not like down here, where you have massive derbies that can start any moment. That will be at 12 o’clock, or 12:30 at the latest. It’ll be either the second or third weekend.”
Kris Boyd hits back at Paul Merson during Rangers v Celtic title duel. Merson’s suggestion sprang from the notion that the title could be determined on the final day – possibly a fantasy vision of what an Old Firm title decider on the final day of the season would truly look like, notwithstanding the fact that no away fans would be present. Rangers have the title race in their hands after a 3-3 draw at Ibrox, with neither side making any significant advances towards the top of the table. They know that if they win the rest of their games, they will win the league.
However, they still have to play Celtic at Parkhead, which may be the deciding factor. Alan Brazil emphasized that Celtic have the rest of the season in their hands since they are in the same position as before: win every game to win the title.
As Brazil claimed, the result indicates that the title chase is far from over. The encounter at Parkhead later this season will most likely be the genuine decider in front of a full Celtic fans, and it will be up to Clement to ensure his squad shows up.
