Joey’s $3 million “marquee player” appeal among the Broncos “bargain”.
Joey claims Walsh might make $3 million year.
According to Andrew Johns, if rising sensation Reece Walsh signed a contract of $1.1 million per season, Brisbane would be getting “a bargain”.
This Monday, News Corp. revealed that the livewire fullback and the Broncos had reached an agreement on a $5.5 million, five-year contract deal.
Walsh would become the most paid player in Red Hill history and rank among the highest paid players in the NRL, but he would still lag behind Knights star Kalyn Ponga, who receives a salary of $1.4 million annually from his team.
Latrell’s jeers
Walsh refuted the rumor on Instagram, and his coach Kevin Walters said that no agreement had been signed.
Johns also gave the 21-year-old advice to hold out for additional money.
Johns told Immortal Behaviour of Wide World of Sports, “He should be on three times that.”
There were rumors that each team in the NRL would have a star player who is exempt from cap restrictions. Walsh may have a yearly value of $2 or $3 million.
“The third-party stuff he could be getting with the Broncos—let’s assume he signed for $1.1 million—could add another million to that.
“Can you imagine if he was sponsored by Nike? They might promote him to everyone.”
An NRL player may make as much money as possible from third-party agreements as long as they aren’t made possible by their club in order to circumvent the salary cap regulations.
Additionally, players receive compensation for serving as representatives; as a result, players like Walsh and Ponga may make an additional $90,000 year just by participating in State of Origin.
The Broncos have already signed high-paying, long-term contracts with players like Brendan Piakura, Patrick Carrigan, Payne Haas, and Ezra Mam.
If the Broncos can sign Walsh for as low as $1.1 million a year and accomplish the same, according to Johns, they will succeed.
It’s a great deal, Johns remarked.
He is a terrific player, as we are all aware. But in terms of promotion, he promotes himself.
“He’s exuberant, an extravert, indifferent to appearance, a great entertainer, and extremely attractive.”
“I believe it’s a great deal. As a player, he enhances that greatly, and he also markets himself.
“He puts bums on seats.”
After sustaining a face fracture in round three against the Panthers, Walsh is out for a month.
