“Goodbye Pioli” – four primary names top the list of probable replacements.
Stefano Pioli’s tenure at AC Milan is coming to an end, and the club’s hierarchy is starting to consider who will succeed him.
According to this morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), Pioli will leave the Rossoneri at the end of the season, assuming no unexpected surprises. Even if he wins the derby, it appears like the choice has already been made.
The club’s unhappiness with the defeat at the Olimpico in Rome prompted an initial assessment: in mid-April, Milan had no objectives or trophy targets, which contradicted what the ownership desired.
The league has long since stopped being an ambition, and Inter’s impending Scudetto triumphs over the excitement of Champions League qualification. The Coppa Italia campaign finished in the quarter-finals, the UCL exit occurred in the group stage, and the Europa League elimination arrived most recently.
It is not acceptable for the club and for Gerry Cardinale (expected at the derby but developments have taken away the certainty of his presence). Hence the need to change course, and the study phase of finding a new coach has already begun.
An international profile.
Milan is searching for an international coach with an identifiable style of play who is skilled at dealing with young players, in accordance with the club’s project: ambition but also sustainability, and who can help 20-year-olds develop.
In recent months, management has taken steps to gather information on two candidates: Julen Lopetegui, who is currently out of action following his time at Wolverhampton, and Paulo Fonseca, who was previously at Roma but is now with Lille.
