Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has turned down Max Verstappen‘s invitation to join the team for the upcoming Formula One season, citing concerns about the current competitiveness of the Mercedes car.

Wolff, who has been at the helm of the Mercedes F1 team for many years, explained that while he respects Verstappen’s talent and achievements, he believes that the team needs to focus on improving its car and performance before making any major changes to its driver lineup.

“Max is one of the most talented drivers in the world, and we would be thrilled to have him on our team,” Wolff stated in a press conference. “But we have to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge that our car is not where it needs to be right now.

Wolff also emphasized that the team is committed to its current driver lineup, which includes George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, both of whom are highly talented and experienced drivers.

Wolff’s decision not to pursue Verstappen is likely to have far-reaching implications for the rest of the F1 field, with many rival teams now expected to intensify their efforts to secure the reigning world champion’s services.

Teams like Ferrari, McLaren, and even Red Bull itself are all believed to be interested in signing Verstappen, making him one of the most sought-after drivers on the market.

“It’s going to be a fascinating offseason for Max Verstappen,” said F1 expert Nico Rosberg.
