DONE DEAL: Dallas Mavericks has formally confirmed a deal worth $115.7 millions following Kyrie Irving departure from the team.
In a shocking turn of events, the Dallas Mavericks signed star point guard D’Angelo Russell to a five-year, $115.7 million contract, just days after fellow great Kyrie Irving unexpectedly left the franchise.
Russell, a previous All-Star and one of the league’s most skilled guards, was allegedly chased by multiple teams before electing to join the Dallas Mavericks, citing his desire to play with the team’s explosive pair of Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis.
The signing of Russell is a bold move for the Mavericks, who are seeking to maintain their position as one of the top teams in the Western Conference following Irving’s exit.
The 28-year-old point guard brings a wealth of experience and skills to the team, having spent time with the Lakers, Nets, and Timberwolves during his career. He is known for his elite playmaking ability and shooting touch, which should complement Doncic’s high-usage style of play.
“D’Angelo is a fantastic player who fits perfectly with our team,” said Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.
The Mavericks’ purchase of Russell marks a big departure in philosophy, since they had previously constructed their offense around Doncic and Irving’s high-scoring exploits.
With Irving’s departure, the club has adopted a more balanced approach, with Russell serving as a more typical playmaker in the backcourt. “We’re excited to see what D’Angelo can do with Luka and Kristaps,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd stated.
