Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet discusses his decision to cancel the dual-registration deal with Wakefield Trinity and sign a contract with Barrow.
WIGAN WARRIORS and Wakefield Trinity’s dual-registration deal expired earlier today, just three months into the current season. Neither side had fully used the arrangement, with the Warriors now reaching a deal with the Barrow Raiders. Wigan head coach Matt Peet described the two decisions as “simple” as he outlined the logic behind them.
“I’ve been in open communication with Daryl (Powell, Wakefield boss) all year,” Peet went on to say. “The truth is, Wakefield has a fantastic squad. They are incredibly ambitious and most likely do not require dual registration at this time, which is a testament to their drive and ambition. “But we’ve had a wonderful connection in terms of open conversation with Wakefield. “Barrow will provide more opportunities for our players, and they have always been great to work with; we have a lot of respect for their head coach, Paul Crarey.”
“When players go on loan to Barrow, they constantly report on how wonderfully they were cared for. “We have had two simple conversations and I think it will work out better for us sending our players to Barrow.” The partnership with the Championship club will provide some of Wigan’s transition players with vital and consistent first-team exposure, as well as the opportunity to play competitive Rugby League, to help them grow. According to the agreement, Wigan players will continue to be registered with the Warriors as well as Barrow.
When a Wigan player signs a dual registration agreement with Barrow, he will be able to play and train for both clubs. The player is only allowed to play one fixture per scheduled round of fixtures in any given week and cannot play for both Barrow and Wigan on the same weekend.
