Breaking News: Magic Johnson’s devastating response to the passing of a former Rockets player.
Magic Johnson’s storied time with the Los Angeles Lakers included him in a number of NBA moments that will never be forgotten. The 1986 Western Conference Finals matchup between the Houston Rockets and Robert Reid stands as one of Johnson’s most memorable postseason series. The Rockets unexpectedly prevailed in that series, largely due to a game-winning three-pointer shot by Reid in the fifth game.
Regretfully, the Rockets and ESPN reported that Reid passed away on Monday. Johnson honored his buddy and former rival on his X account, which was once known as Twitter.
“The news that my friend Robert Reid went away today saddens me greatly. Robert was one of the league’s greatest defensive defenders and a hard competitor for the Houston Rockets! Over the years, we had numerous meals together, and he was always a gracious host when I visited Houston. He was a wonderful man, and his family, our NBA family, and friends like me are all grieving his loss. During this trying time, Cookie and I are praying for the whole Reid family, friends, and the NBA family,” Johnson wrote.
Two photos were posted by Johnson: one showed Reid by himself wearing his Rockets shirt, and the other showed Reid defending Magic Johnson. According to ESPN, Reid had been battling cancer. He died on Monday at the age of 68 at home in Houston.
