Former Real Madrid attacker found guilty of rape and given a nine-year prison sentence in Brazil.
Robinho, a former forward for Manchester City, AC Milan, and Real Madrid, was sentenced to nine years in prison for rape after the Brazilian Supreme Court granted an Italian plea, pending an appeal.
Robinho was allowed to finish his term in Brazil by a vote of nine to two in the Supreme Court. Due to Brazil’s lack of an extradition procedure for its citizens, the 40-year-old Brazilian has been evading punishment in Italy after being found guilty of rape for an event that occurred in 2013.
Although Italian police produced audio evidence refuting Robinho’s account of events, Robinho continues to defend his innocence and claim that the relationship was consensual. He was a member of AC Milan at the time of the incident. The magistrate noted that it was not their responsibility to amend the verdict, just to determine whether it satisfied the conditions for the sentence to be transferred. He can appeal the ruling, but he will have to go to jail first, according to Sport.
This judgment was made on the same day that Dani Alves, a former teammate on the international squad, was granted a €1 million bail package to be released from prison as he awaited his appeal against a conviction for rape.
