Dan Ashworth brought a wealth of ideas and desire to Newcastle United, a team with lofty aspirations of its own. After two years, Manchester United is back with the same ambitious aspirations to turn things around at Old Trafford.

Although Ashworth’s departure is not official and the story will probably drag on for several months, the club itself expressed his wish to step down on Monday. Now that his gardening vacation has begun, the Red Devils must make good on their obligation or risk having to wait a long time to see their top target.

Many people who support Newcastle, wearing their black and white glasses, have questioned Ashworth’s motivation for leaving the team when they are poised for success in the years to come. However, Ashworth’s remarks upon his arrival at St James’ Park might shed light on his thoughts.

“There are moments in life when you simply think, ‘Oh my goodness, this is too good to pass up,'” Ashworth remarked in 2022, a few months after moving to Newcastle. “I want to be a sporting director that competes at the top level in Europe, winning trophies.” And I had a lot of fun building; it thrilled me.

Since then, Ashworth has talked about creating a group and a club that can make it to the Champions League each year. Many believe that his early departure damaged his reputation in this area.BREAKING NEWS:Dan Ashworth's 'blimey' remarks against Newcastle provide away Manchester United's choice.

Although there’s no doubting Newcastle’s remarkable attractiveness at this point in their development, Manchester United is also embarking on a thrilling new chapter after Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 25% stake in the team. The 13-time Premier League winners are assembling a strong backroom team, with highly-regarded Jason Wilcox from Southampton expected to join Omar Berrada, the CEO of the City Football Group, at Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe and his INEOS colleagues, led by Sir Dave Brailsford, are expected to take over football-related decisions in the red half of Manchester following years of criticism directed towards the Glazer family. For many years to come, Manchester United will probably have access to greater resources than the majority of Premier League teams due to their abundance of cash from many sources. They’ll also have corresponding vision.

Having wasted years of money on underdeveloped talent, Ashworth will undoubtedly want to contribute his unique approach to talent discovery and cost-cutting. ‘Blimey, it’s just too good to turn down,’ he obviously thought.
