Breaking News: Caleb Williams is a “special” prospect that NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah believes should be selected first overall.
Caleb Williams USC supporters saw the same thing that Daniel Jeremiah did.
During a Zoom call with media ahead of the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, the longtime NFL Network analyst and former NFL scout made it apparent that the footage just supports the hype surrounding the former USC quarterback, who is slated as the top choice in the forthcoming NFL Draft.
If we’re just looking at pure talent, you can put Jacob up there with really any of the guys we’ve had just in terms of arm strength, athleticism, creativity, and play-making ability. “Caleb, to me, is a top guy,” Jeremiah said. “When you look at him specifically and his evaluation trying to stack him up with guys from the past, I think just talent,” Jeremiah added.
Jeremiah made it apparent that Williams is still a work in progress. Trojan supporters witnessed that as well on the times when his remarkable ability to prolong plays resulted in passes or decisions he wishes he could take back. This is why evaluating the entire body of work is so important. If you do that, Jeremiah thinks there’s only one adjective to describe his talent level.
“As of late, he lacks the cleanliness and polish of some of the guys we have had.” Jeremiah continued. Stroud was undoubtedly somewhat prefabricated and was able to jump right in. Although Caleb’s game still needs some refinement and development, his skill is really exceptional.
This quarterback draft is competitive. Four quarterbacks are slated for the top eight spots in Jeremiah’s most recent mock draft. Most people rank Williams, Arizona State’s Jayden Daniels, and North Carolina’s Drake Maye as the top three prospects, with Michael Penix, Jr. of Washington, Oregon’s Bo Nix, and Michigan’s JJ McCarthy rounding out a formidable class. 
Williams returned this season and finished No. 7 in quarterback rankings (170.15), tied for No. 8 in yards per attempt (9.4), and No. 12 in completion % after earning the Heisman Trophy to end the 2022 regular season. In addition, he ran for 11 touchdowns.
Consideration of context is crucial when assessing draft chances. Williams has to deal with regular comparisons to Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who recently won his third Super Bowl. Jeremiah pointed out a significant similarities between Mahomes and Williams at this point in their careers.
“I felt that Mahomes’ circumstances at Texas Tech and Caleb’s circumstances at USC were extremely similar,” Jeremiah remarked. “I believe that people need to stop comparing Caleb to Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush from their time at USC. Those are the distant memories.Texas Tech ranked 128th in scoring defense during Pat’s final season there. USC ranked 121st this year. He chased points all the time. That, I believed, was the cause of some of the poor habits that this year saw a slight emergence of. At USC, he dropped eight games. Throughout those games, they allowed up an average of 43 points. When they were able to surrender fewer than 34 points, he was 12-0.
The two quarterbacks’ alluring similarities were also evident on the footage.
Jeremiah stated, “I’ve commented about him, and you’re going to bring up Patrick Mahomes.” “Look, you don’t want to compare someone to the world’s greatest player, but there are some similarities there in terms of how he plays with a little flair and inventiveness, as well as in all the different throws he can make to drive the ball, layer the ball, extend plays, and do all those things.
“Pat needed a year to clear his head and was given the opportunity to sit.” Naturally, I don’t think Caleb will have the same luxury in that area, but I believe you can set up a system where you give him more tasks to complete the longer he stays in.”
Conspiracy theories are common at this time of year. There is so much data available that it can lead to some misleading conclusions. Since Jeremiah was found guilty, the Chicago Bears, who have the first overall pick in the draft, shouldn’t give this case too much thought.
“I may have used the word ‘no-brainer’ too strongly at one point,” Jeremiah said. “I really believe that I should take Caleb Williams. Unless you have the best offer possible, which consists of a mix of players and picks that are simply too excellent to refuse. To get me off that choice, it would have to completely blow me away.
“Perfect players don’t exist. As a player, Caleb is not flawless. Caleb’s ability is incredible, and what he can become is really exciting, but it will take some time and effort to put together.”
Jeremiah continued, “You have to be strategic about how you get him going and up and running, but I think the upside there, the tools there are pretty dang elite.” Every 10 years, there will be one or two Super Bowls where Nick Foles and an incredible squad will take you on a magical journey. The world’s best players, the elite ones like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, seem to be winning the rest of them.
“I believe you have to take your shot if you are the Bears and you have the opportunity to go out there and get one of these guys who can be elite.”
