Report: There’s a big reason why the Brandon Aiyuk trade is taking so long.

Though it appears that Brandon Aiyuk, the outstanding wide receiver, does not want to be dealt by the San Francisco 49ers, it appears that this is the closer situation than ever. The 49ers reportedly have the basic structure of a deal in place to trade Aiyuk to the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to a report on Tuesday. The Niners hope to retain the 26-year-old for the remainder of the season and have extended a long-term contract offer to Aiyuk.

“What I’ve been told is that Brandon Aiyuk would prefer to stay with the 49ers and has always preferred to stay with the 49ers, all things being equal,” Mike Garafolo of NFL Network said. “Now, they haven’t been equal, but they did make that offer. In fact, both sides sent proposals within the past couple days or week or so and the 49ers’ number has gotten better than what it was previously.”

“That seems like there’s one more thing that needs to be worked out, but from what I understand, they’ve agreed on a lot of the major points of the deal. If that gets worked out, Brandon Aiyuk signs the deal, stays with the 49ers, and he drops the trade request, so the Niners can finally move on from this.”

Aiyuk threw some doubt on a report from Friday that stated the 49ers were working harder to get him to sign a new deal. The report was posted on social media. It appeared from Aiyuk’s response that the two parties were far from reaching an agreement. All along, Aiyuk has desired a long-term extension from the Niners. Aiyuk would need to sign a contract worth at least $30 million annually for the team to be willing to rank among the NFL’s highest-paid receivers. Aiyuk appears to have Pittsburgh at the top of his trade want list in the event that the two sides are unable to reach a consensus. According to reports, he even prevented a trade to at least one other team.
