Welcome to a new era of college football. Former Michigan Wolverines cornerback/wide receiver Amorion Walker, who committed to Ole Miss in January after entering the transfer portal, has now agreed to return to Ann Arbor.

Walker was a depth player at both cornerback and wide out for Michigan last season. Many anticipated him to challenge for the second cornerback spot this year after switching from wide receiver. However, he struggled in the 2023 spring game, and Michigan received a commitment from Josh Wallace, the eventual starting cornerback. With the development of a few other younger defensive backs, Walker found himself buried on the depth chart, which threatened his confidence.

That led to his eventual decision to use the transfer portal and locate a temporary home at Ole Miss. Meanwhile, a few Michigan players entered the portal, including cornerback DJ Waller and receivers Cristian Dixon and Karmello English. Suddenly, the Wolverines faced obvious needs at both of the positions Walker has filled in Ann Arbor.

Walker now has a clear opportunity to fill a void in any role. He appeared in five games at defensive back as a sophomore in 2023, recording three tackles and a half tackle for loss. Walker played six games as a freshman, five at receiver and one at defensive back. He had one reception for four yards on the offensive side.

Walker, a former three-star recruit and the No. 526 player in the 2022 class, created a name for himself in Ann Arbor during his first two seasons due to his athleticism. To this point in his career, he has demonstrated positional versatility on both sides of the ball. C.J. Charleston, a transfer wide receiver from Youngstown State, committed to the Wolverines on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see how this affects Sherrone Moore’s plans now that Walker is back in the fold, since Michigan has depth needs at both defensive back and wide receiver following the transfers at either position in the spring.
