The Chicago Bears sign an undrafted project quarterback from Western Kentucky The Chicago Bears returned to work immediately following the draft. The Bears have signed Austin Reed, an undrafted quarterback from Western Kentucky. Tyson Bagent is now the backup quarterback. And, prior to a quarterback competition, he should be the backup quarterback. Bagent did well in Justin Fields’ absence in 2023. Bagent even guided the Chicago Bears to a few of victories.

Reed will most likely be part of a quarterback competition in camp to determine who should be on the roster. Reed might take over as quarterback number three, replacing Brett Rypien. Bagent has the advantage of being last season’s backup quarterback. The Chicago Bears are well aware of Bagent’s capabilities. Reed would have to stun the squad to dethrone Bagent as QB 2.

Analysis

Lance Zierlein, an NFL commentator, provides a brief review of Austin Reed’s game:

“Reed has impressive career stats but lacks NFL traits for the position.” He benefited from a strategy that featured about 30% of his throws targeted behind the line of scrimmage in 2023, but he still completed less than 60% of his attempts, according to Pro Football Focus. While his receivers lost far too many easy passes, Reed frequently lacked the touch and accuracy required to make their jobs easier. He’s a competitor who can get away from pressure and make plays outside of the box, but he lacks the arm strength to complete the intermediate and long throws required for the position in the NFL.”

Breakdown

There’s not much to say about this signing. Reed is a very raw potential, as Zierlein aptly described. Reed might develop into an effective backup quarterback in the NFL. He still needs to grow a lot before he can reach that point. Two of his primary skills are his ability to escape and his understanding of pressure. His arm need improvement in several areas. From deep ball accuracy to release point, he has to work on his mechanics. This isn’t a big deal, though; he’s an undrafted free agent after all. The Chicago Bears took a low-risk gamble on Reed. Bring him to training camp and find out what he looks like. It’s possible he won’t make the 53-man roster. Or maybe Reed become.
