REPORT: South Carolina Basketball: Top three Gamecock major transfer portal targets.
Lamont Paris, South Carolina’s basketball coach, appears to have narrowed down his two primary transfer targets.
After the Gamecocks signed 7-foot sophomore Jordan Butler (a South Carolina native), USC had two more scholarships open, and most fans expected Paris and his coaching staff to search for another big man and a point guard. Based on the transfer portal targets who visited in recent days, those beliefs appeared to be correct.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide starting center Nick Pringle (another South Carolina native) is on campus this weekend, and he appears to be an ideal fit in the post for the Gamecocks. Along with outstanding sophomore Collin Murray-Boyles at power forward, Carolina boasts two promising young players in Butler and freshman Okku Federiko, as well as bench veteran Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk. Adding a powerful and athletic true center is exactly what the squad needs to make fans confident in the team’s forwards and centers.
The second primary goal appears to be point guard Jhamir Brickus. Brickus, a four-year starter at La Salle, can score (almost 14 points per game last season on 43%/40%/86% shooting) and distribute the ball. Brickus, despite his shorter stature, might fill the same role as last year’s starting point guard, Ta’Lon Cooper.
After his visit to Columbia, Brickus declared his top three schools on Friday morning. Brickus disclosed in an Instagram post titled “Just having fun [with] this” that he is contemplating three teams: the South Carolina Gamecocks, the VCU Rams, and the Villanova Wildcats.
South Carolina basketball has been viewed by some in the college basketball world as the favorite to land Brickus, but he is taking a final visit to Villanova, where he will see his former head coach Ashley Howard who is now an assistant coach at ‘Nova. Brickus previously visited VCU, as well.
Predicting Brickus’ landing spot is difficult as he seemed to really enjoy his visits to VCU and South Carolina, and the connection with Howard could be a major factor.
Though Brickus appeared to be the main point guard target recently, Lamont Paris has recruited other players through the transfer portal, so fans should not be concerned if the Gamecocks do not get his commitment. Coach Paris has done an excellent job in the portal every cycle since arriving at Columbia, and this will continue this offseason.
