Venezuelan head coach Fernando Batista has announced that Daniel Maldini will continue to try to break into the Italy squad rather than switching allegiances to Venezuela.

Batista told TMW (via Football Italia) that negotiations had taken place between the Monza loanee and his father, Paolo Maldini, but the winger wishes to continue his current activities for the time being.

Maldini is entitled to play for Venezuela through his mother, and the Venezuelan FA was aware of this, which is why they began attempting to profit on the fact that he had not appeared for Italy’s senior team.

There is no suggestion that Maldini is going to be in the Italy setup in the immediate future, but he could sign for Monza permanently from AC Milan in the summer which could lead to more consistent game time in a settled environment.

This must have played a key role in Maldini’s decision to reject Venezuela.

Batista said that Maldini’s door to Venezuela remains open in case he changes his mind later.

“Yes, I spoke to him. Both with him and with his father, Paolo. We know he can play with us because his mother is Venezuelan. We encouraged him to engage in an internship and Pre-Olympic training with the Under 23s, which was just held in Venezuela,” Batista stated.

“Daniel thanked me strongly, but told me that for the moment he prefers to continue as so, he wants to see if he can play with Italy. We tried, I spoke to both his father and him to invite him to play.

“For the time being, he appreciates it greatly, but he wants to wait and see if he will be able to play for Italy someday, and that must be respected. However, if he ever decides to alter his mind and play for Venezuela, the doors are always open.SO BAD: The Milan star may never play in "San Siro" again because Stefano Pioli does not value him.

Maldini was on loan at Empoli this season, but after appearing sparingly, he was transferred to Monza, where he is performing well.
