According to reports, the 49ers had interest in former Bengals free agent wide receiver Tyler Boyd.
This summer, the San Francisco 49ers have been rather quiet on offence. They signed Josh Dobbs, a backup quarterback, and Brandon Parker, an offensive tackle. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings received a second-round tender, but other than Brandon Aiyuik rumours, that’s all we know. According to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic, the 49ers were one of a few clubs that considered signing former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd. “Boyd has at least had preliminary interest from the Chiefs, Chargers, Dolphins, Lions, and Bengals,” Kaboly said in a statement.
Boyd, an eight-year pro, has consistently produced, accumulating at least 600 yards in every year save one. His outstanding performance in 2018 and 2019, when he surpassed 1,000 yards receiving, demonstrates his ability. Boyd’s presence might be a game changer for the 49ers, since he has played at least 70% of snaps in the previous six seasons. Standing at 6’2, he fits the ‘power slot’ role that Kyle Shanahan is looking for in his offence, potentially adding a new element to the club.
This season, Boyd had a solid outing against the Niners’ defence, catching all three of his targets for 40 yards and a touchdown. That game resulted in adjustments in the 49ers’ secondary. Boyd, a free agent, may be a significant acquisition to the 49ers. If Jennings signs an offer sheet elsewhere, he will be a reliable Plan B. While it’s unclear whether the two could coexist in this offence, given their strengths in the slot, Boyd’s prospective addition provides the squad with a reassuring backup plan.
Spotrac estimates Boyd’s annual compensation to be roughly $8.7 million. Given Boyd’s failure to strike an agreement with the Pittsburgh Steelers, his asking price may be too high. The more he waits, the more probable the number will decrease. Even if nothing comes of this Boyd rumour, it reveals the type of wideout the 49ers are looking for this offseason.
