Despite being among the finest players on the team in his new role as a wing, Lomax, 24, has been unhappy at St George Illawarra since Shane Flanagan switched him from center to the position.
On Nine’s 100% Footy, reporter Michael Chammas of 9news and the Sydney Morning Herald disclosed that the Dragons had granted the outside back authority to speak with rival teams starting in 2025.
“The Eels are desperate for him, they want him this year, the Dragons are adamant that’s not going to be the case, he can talk to other clubs about 2025,” he stated.
According to 2GB’s Neil Breen, Lomax has asked for a release six times. However, Flanagan has maintained his position, saying the Dragons would require a “very good” in exchange if an instant release was to occur.
Paul Gallen, the former captain of the NSW Blues, expressed confusion as to why Lomax would wish to quit, saying that his current form has made him a contender for Origin.
He stated on 100% Footy, “I don’t really understand why it sounds like he’s going to go.”
“He’s in the conversation for a wing spot if you’re picking the NSW team today or very, very soon; if he’s still in the centres, he’s not in the conversation.”
Latrell Mitchell, Turbo (Tom Trbojevic), Taylan May, (Izack) Tago, and Stephen Crichton (who can play center for NSW) are among the players you have.
“I don’t think he’s in the conversation, but I think if he’s on the wing he’s a chance.”
There are rumors that the Dragons are considering out-of-contract Panthers winger Sunia Turuva, so they may decide to replace Lomax in the future with a less expensive option.
The Panthers have extended a $350,000 contract offer to Turuva, who could fetch $500k on the open market.
