GREAT NEWS: Latrell Mitchell is urged by an Indigenous rugby league hero to become a better “team player.”
Latrell Mitchell has been urged to be a greater “team player” by Indigenous rugby league legend Larry Corowa, as the Rabbitohs prepare to start the 2024 season this week and are looking to lose for the fourth straight week.
Corowa played six seasons with the Balmain Tigers in the 1970s and 1980s, and two more with the Gold Coast Seagulls in the early 1990s. In 1980, he was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
The former Balmain player, who was regarded as one of the most prolific try-scorers in the sport, went on to play two Test matches for Australia and five matches for New South Wales.
In light of the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ current low standing and the firing of Jason Demetriou, Corowa feels that star fullback Latrell Mitchell needs to adopt a more “team player” mentality.
The former Test and Balmain star told Wide World of Sports that Latrell “doesn’t do himself any favors” and that “he just needs to concentrate on being the class player he is and do everything to win for the team.”
“He needs to stop staring at the big screen and stop being frightening and allow his football do the talking.
“Everyone will adore the new Latrell if you are a team player. Focus, work harder, and keep things simple, and the benefits will eventually show.”
Corowa went on to say that while he understands the demands placed on the Bunnies’ star, Mitchell ought to adopt the same strategy he used when playing.
“I didn’t have many haters back in the day – they were pretty much all good supporters from every team,” Corowa stated.
“But when I did cop some stick it just made me more determined to try harder and Latrell needs to take the same approach.”
