“I won’t be doing that again”: Kevvie’s admission of a serious mistake as the legend’s son gets ready for minutes.

After being forced into a significant backfield reorganization due to Reece Walsh’s injury, Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters acknowledged he won’t repeat the same mistake of not carrying an outside back on his bench.

In the first few minutes of the game, Walsh and Taylan May had a frightening head collision that left Walsh with a deep gash beneath his left eye.

Walsh was disqualified from the competition even though he passed his HIA because he had trouble seeing, and May was also reported and fined for the incident.

But since Walsh was not disqualified for an HIA, Walters was left with an interchange without outside backs to adequately replace the speedster. Walters was unable to activate Wendell Sailor’s son Tristan Sailor as the 18th man.

The only options available to the Broncos boss were Xavier Willison, Kobe Hetherington, Marty Taupau, and Tyson Smoothy, who would have to fit square pegs into round holes at the back.

Walters was forced to acknowledge that he made a mistake in selecting Sailor as his 18th player. He also said that he and his coaching team will make sure that more players receive the necessary training to feel at ease in an outside back role.

In his news conference following the game, Walters stated, “We’ve got Tristan Sailor parked there as 18th man but he can’t come into the game, so we won’t be doing that again.”

“Well, we must have him on our bench because fullback is a specialized position that becomes vulnerable if some of those outside backs go down.

“Anyway, I’m not holding that against you; we simply handled the matter poorly. Every club deals with it at a different moment, and this is most likely the first time this group has dealt with it.

“As coaches, we’ll be better to ensure that we receive more training in that position where he’s not present.”

Walters could only laugh when asked if the NRL should change the regulations to allow the 18th man to be used in an event where a player was ruled out due to a penalty.

Walters remarked, “Well, you probably don’t want to tinker with it if you’re Ivan Cleary.”

“The game has been in existence for a while. All we need to do is improve in that area.

“I accept some of the blame there because it’s my responsibility as a coach to select the best players for the bench to ensure we have adequate access to cover every situation.”"I won't be doing that again": Kevvie's admission of a serious mistake as the legend's son gets ready for minutes.

Ad Walters remained ambiguous over Walsh’s injuries, although the team did clarify that he will have scans on Friday morning to determine the exact degree of his left eye’s damage.

Walters responded, “Yeah, he’s not too good in there, but we’ve got good people to look after him.”

“He is having visual problems. He has a large gash.

“We took him out of the game even though he tried to get back on.”
