Valentine Holmes is expected to be hit with a heavy financial penalty from the North Queensland Cowboys following the infamous photo of a bag of white powder he posted on Instagram earlier this month.

Holmes, 28, is adamant the image – which showed the Queensland Origin and Kangaroos centre holding a small bag of white powder between his teeth – was a prank between friends gone wrong.

Cowboys CEO Jeff Reibel confirmed the club is yet to decide on its penalties for the Holmes photo saga.

‘We are yet to reach a resolution,’ he told News Corp.

‘Val was requested to appear before the board and has done that.

‘We are now in consideration and will look to finalise in the coming days after we have completed our due diligence.’

A guide to possible action over the photo can be found in the case of Melbourne Storm star Cameron Munster, who was pictured holding a bag containing white powder in a scandal that emerged in September of 2021.

Munster and then teammate Brandon Smith were questioned by the NRL Integrity Unit over leaked mobile phone footage that showed them in a hotel room with a mystery substance on a coffee table.

The champion five-eighth also featured in a second clip showing him dancing shirtless on a table while holding what appeared to be a small bag containing white powder.
