BREAKING NEWS: To stick with Sean McVay, the Rams coach declined the position of Patriots coordinator.

Over the course of the summer, the Los Angeles Rams saw numerous coaching changes once more. Many Rams staff members followed defensive coordinator Raheem Morris when he was hired as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Just recently, Sean McVay assembled his coaching staff.

For McVay, changing coaches has not been a novel experience since moving to Los Angeles. It has been a recurring theme for almost all of the offseasons. Despite the Rams’ dismal 5-12 season in 2022, McVay was still obliged to make staff replacements. But rather than continuing to work with men he knew or had dated in the past, he employed talented outsiders like Nick Caley and Ryan Wendell.BREAKING NEWS: To stick with Sean McVay, the Rams coach declined the position of Patriots coordinator.

With Caley influencing the run game and Mike LaFleur and Wendell forming the offensive line, both coaches played a significant role in the Rams’ 2023 turnaround. The Rams nearly lost Caley to the New England Patriots to become the offensive coordinator on Jerod Mayo’s staff as a result of their success, particularly Caley. Caley made the decision to remain with McVay and the Rams even after receiving the job offer.

The Patriots hired Alex Van Pelt, an ex-Browns offensive coordinator, in place of Caley, thus McVay was spared from having to replace yet another coach that he had hired in the offseason. After the 2022 season, Caley took Thomas Brown’s spot on the Rams staff. Caley was regarded as one of the NFL’s up-and-coming young coaches. Last season, he interviewed for positions as offensive coordinators as well, but he felt that the Rams were the greatest fit.

Even though McVay pushes his staff’s coaches to go after bigger chances and promotions, he won’t be unhappy that Caley is staying put.
