BREAKING NEWS: Newcastle United uses a Premier League loophole to make a surprise acquisition following a £57 million decision.
Newcastle United has a thin roster going into the last few months of the campaign.
Following surgery for a chest issue, Callum Wilson will miss the remainder of the season. Joelinton might miss several months of action this season due to his injury.
Sandro Tonali, a midfielder for Newcastle, is likewise out of action until August. He was therefore left out of The Magpies’ 25-man roster for the second part of the year.
Newcastle sold right-back Javier Manquillo to Celta Vigo during the winter transfer window, although they did not make any other senior acquisitions. With Manquillo’s departure and Tonali’s suspension, Newcastle has two openings in their 25-man roster.
In order to be qualified to play in the Premier League this season, Newcastle is able to sign and register free agents thanks to the available spots. Although it is improbable that Newcastle will sign a free agent, Premier League regulations stipulate that roster modifications can be made ‘during a Transfer Window; or at other times only with the Board’s agreement.’
Up until the fourth Thursday in March (March 28), Premier League clubs are eligible to register players, including free agent acquisitions. Furthermore, any modifications to a team’s roster would probably be approved by the Premier League board as long as there remain open spots in the 25-man roster, which is the case with Newcastle.
During last week’s pre-game press conference, Eddie Howe made a joke about signing free agents, saying, “If you can give me some names!”
However, free agents are free agents for a reason, and at this point, there aren’t many compelling possibilities available. Up front, Stoke City just released former Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle, and former Bournemouth forward Lys Mousset is also available. Howe has previously worked with Mousset.
Anwar El Ghazi, the former winger for Aston Villa, is among a select group of well-known players without a club who have played in the Premier League before. Goalkeeper David De Gea is the most well-known free agent; he has been connected to a move to Newcastle in the past. However, Newcastle is hoping that their persistent injury problems will ultimately go away and they won’t have to enter the free agent market.
